Senior Pet Care
Pets enter their senior years around the age of 7. Your pet may not seem like a "senior," but older pets have health care needs that are very different from those of younger pets. At Mayde Creek Animal Health Center, we understand the unique needs of your senior pet. Our veterinarians and staff can help guide you through your pet's "golden years" and ensure you and your faithful companion enjoy many more happy years together.
When it comes to the healthcare of senior pets, prevention is key. Symptoms of serious health care problems are often masked by the typical signs of "old age" - a decrease in energy, difficulty moving, problems with vision or hearing and so on. Frequent wellness exams will help us spot the signs of disease and implement treatment before the problem becomes too serious. If your pet is exhibiting any of the following signs, please let us know:
- Increased stiffness or limping
- Changes in elimination habits
- Increased thirst
- Changes in breathing patterns or excessive panting
- Decreased responsiveness
- Tremors or shaking
- Skin and hair or coat changes
- Weight change (loss or gain)
- Enlarged abdomen
- Difficulty seeing/hearing
- Odor or discharge from ears
Through a combination of your observations of your pet's health and regular medical exams, we can establish a baseline health for your pet. Examinations include a thorough physical exam as well as a series of diagnostic laboratory tests. These tests can detect diabetes and heart disease, evaluate organ functions and spot parasites and other health problems.
Remember: pets age more quickly than humans. When it comes to your pet's health, a lot can change in even just a few months. Regular preventive exams and a watchful eye on your pet's health can help keep your pet healthy and comfortable for many years to come.
