Wellness Care
Wellness Exams

Prevention is the key to keeping your pet healthy. Mayde Creek Animal Health Center recommends twice-yearly wellness exams for dogs and annual exams for cats. Frequent exams are useful for identifying potential health problems before they become more serious, more difficult and more expensive to treat.
During a wellness exam, we perform a thorough physical examination of your pet. Our veterinarians complete a "nose to tail" exam looking at heart and lung functions, testing your pet's eyes and ears, palpating the abdomen for signs of swelling, testing the joints for signs of arthritis or decreased function and examining your pet's teeth and oral cavity. We may also perform a series of routine laboratory tests in order to detect parasites such as heartworm, as well as to detect signs of heart disease, diabetes and other internal problems.
Regular exams are extremely important for your pet. Exams give us an opportunity to develop a picture of your pet's overall health, information that is invaluable when diagnosing and treating your pet. Exams also are an excellent time for you to ask your questions that you may have about your pet's health. We strongly encourage all clients to ask questions and take an active role in their pet's health care.
Vaccinations
Vaccines are the cornerstone of your pet's health care plan. When your pet is up to date on his or her vaccinations, he or she is safeguarded against many contagious diseases, parasites and other potential health problems.

When it comes to vaccinations, every pet has unique needs. We tailor vaccination protocols to the needs of each pet. We take into account factors such as your pet's lifestyle, state and local regulations and potential exposure to locally endemic diseases. We use vaccination guidelines from the American Animal Hospital Association and the American Association of Feline Practitioners as a starting point. Mayde Creek Animal Health Center uses non-adjuvanted vaccines for cats whenever possible to reduce the likelihood of vaccine-associated fibrosarcomas.
The veterinarians at Mayde Creek Animal Health Center recommend three-year vaccinations when legal and appropriate; annual vaccinations when appropriate, and semi-annual vaccinations for diseases in which vaccines produce a shorter duration of immunity. If you have further questions about what sort of vaccination protocol is right for your pet, please ask a staff member or veterinarian.
Microchipping
Pet identification is a must! But sometimes, a collar or ID tag is not enough to make sure your pet finds his or her way home safely. Microchipping your pet is a safe, easy and effective way of keeping your pet safe should he or she become lost.
A microchip is about the size and shape of a grain of rice and is implanted underneath your pet's skin, usually between the shoulder blades. The procedure is safe and simple and similar to a vaccination. Each microchip is encoded with unique information about your pet (including your contact information). This information is also stored in a national pet database. Veterinary hospitals and animal shelters across the country are equipped with special scanners capable of detecting and reading microchips. If your pet is lost, his or her microchip is scanned and the information is used to reunite you and your companion.
Mayde Creek Animal Health Center uses the resQ microchip system developed by Bayer. Please ask a staff member for details about microchipping your pet.
