Pet Dental Care

Preventative Dental Treatments for Your Dog or Cat

Proper dental care is just as important for your pets as it is for humans! Regular dental exams not only keep your pet's teeth clean and healthy - dental health can affect his or her overall health. When left untreated, issues in the gums can cause severe infections, leading to periodontal disease and tooth loss. The infection can also spread in the blood to other organs, causing problems in the heart, liver, and kidneys.

Prevention is vital when it comes to dental care for your pet. Regular cleanings and at-home dental care can prevent plaque and tartar build-up on your pet's teeth, and prevent the onset of periodontal disease. At Mayde Creek Animal Health Center, we will provide routine dental procedures, including dental cleanings and extractions for your family pet.

Symptoms to Watch For

When plaque builds up on your pet's teeth, it hardens into tartar and damages the teeth and gums. This results in the disease known as gingivitis. Signs of gingivitis include bad breath and red, inflamed gums. If left untreated, gingivitis can cause periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a serious infection that can damage your pet’s teeth and gums and lead to additional health problems. The following symptoms are indicators that your pet may have periodontal disease:

  • Discomfort while chewing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Pawing at the mouth
  • Inflamed or bleeding gums
  • Bad breath

Your Pet's Dental Cleaning

Regular dental cleanings are the first step toward preventing periodontal disease. Our skilled veterinarians and technicians at Mayde Creek Animal Health Center can perform a thorough dental cleaning for your pet. Our professional dental cleanings include:

  • A thorough visual exam with x-rays
  • Ultrasonic scaling
  • Root planing
  • Polishing

Before a cleaning, each pet undergoes a complete physical examination and blood tests are performed. These tests help detect any complications that may occur during anesthesia. We use the results of these tests to develop an anesthetic protocol that is tailored for your pet.

While your pet is under anesthesia, we will closely monitor his or her vital signs using the latest monitoring equipment. We use blankets and warming pads keep your pet warm and comfortable during the procedure and a trained veterinary technician will keep an eye on your pet the entire time.

At-Home Pet Dental Care

Caring for your pet's teeth at home is an important preventive measure that ensures good oral hygiene. At your pet’s next exam, our staff can show you how to care for and brush your pet's teeth at home. We also can provide you with recommendations for specialty pet foods and treats that promote good oral health.
